Visio Professional 2013 Tutorial - Creating a Basic Crows' Foot ERD

In this tutorial, you will learn the basics of creating a Crow's Foot ERD in MS Visio

Professional (2013). If you wish to download your own copy, you will need to Google it and

later purchase it. This version of Visio should be available in the labs.

ERD Components

When you create an ERD, you typically need to create the entities and the relationships between

them. Each entity will have features such as attributes and would also need its PK and FK

attributes indicated. Also, some attributes may be required attributes.

With regard to relationships, you can set them as identifying or not including the cardinalities.

Generally, these are the main tasks required.

Visio 2013 differs quite significantly from 2010 as it has given the user more liberty in the design

of the ERDs, which means more design errors are possible on the part of the user. Old er versions

such as 2010, would automate a few features making it easier to use. So please note that you will

need to indicate symbols manually more yourself than in other versions.

Instructions

We will create a simple ERD so that you can understand the fundamentals of working with Visio.

Follow the steps below.

1. In order to begin with Visio 2013, depending on your Operating System, use the Start

Menu bar and locate Visio Professional (2013).

2. When Visio opens, you would automatically get a window similar to the one below.

Select the Crow's Foot template or search for it in the search box. It's circled in the

diagram below.
