Catfish [kat-fish] n. 1. any of the numerous fishes having a fancied resemblance to a cat, characterized by barbels around the mouth and the absence of scales.
2. Slang. a person who assumes a false identity or personality on the internet, especially to deceive or manipulate.
"Don't get catfished." From the delicious freshwater fish native to every continent but Antartica to a popular television show and term for someone who deceives, the word "catfish" has undergone great changes in meaning in recent years.

Catfish are popular from the aquarium hobby to the dinner plate. Small catfish, some less than 1 inch (2.54 cm) in length, are kept as pets.
In the wild, the largest catfish ever caught weighed 646 lbs (293 kg). Catfish are easily recognized by their barbels or "whiskers," which they use to feel, taste, and smell.
A few species can produce an electric shock!

Step-by-Step Instructions for Drawing a Catfish
1. Begin by sketching the catfish's eyes. First, outline two large ovals. Notice the overlapping lines at the top and bottom of the ovals. Within each oval, shade a smaller oval to indicate the pupils. Then, draw a curved line to form an eyelash above each eye.
2. Use curved lines to draw the mouth and barbel. Notice how the lines of the lips do not overlap, and how the lines of the barbel meet at a point.
3. Draw a barbel on the opposite side of the mouth. Use a pair of curved lines that meet at a point. Then, use a long "S" shaped line to begin outlining the body.
4. Draw the lower jaw using overlapping curved lines. Draw another, longer curved line parallel to the first.
5. Draw four additional barbels surrounding the fish's mouth. Use pairs of short curved lines that meet at points for each.
6. Use a long curved line to draw the fish's pectoral fin. Extend the line to form the scalloped edge, then double it back upon itself. Then, use a long curved line to sketch the remaining side of the fish's body.
7. Draw the fish's dorsal fin. First, draw a curved "V" shaped line. Then, connect the tips of the "V" with a wavy line. Use curved lines to complete the body and connect the ends of the tail. Enclose the first of the tail fins using a curved line.
8. Draw the tail or caudal fin. Extend two curved lines from the end of the body, then connect them with a curved line. Enclose the anal fin below the tail and a pectoral fin at the side of the body, using a curved line for each.
9. Texture the fins and tail with curved lines running down the length of each.
Color your catfish. Many catfish display dark colors, such as black, brown, or green, in order to blend in with their muddy environments. Some have shades of red or blue. Albino catfish are white, and the glass catfish has transparent skin that allows you to see its organs and bones!
